Publishing Via Networking
Abstract
Why do some research papers make it to the top journals while others do not? Do publications in these prestigious outlets reflect the inherent quality of the research—such as groundbreaking discoveries or methodological innovations—or do they also depend on the authors' information on editorial preferences, effective result framing, and research connections? Recent evidence suggests that both factors may play a role. However, to disentangle these influences, robust measures of academic networking are essential, yet difficult to observe empirically. To address this gap, we construct a novel dataset that quantifies research connectivity and its impact on publication outcomes. Using data from Google scholar pages, faculty CVs, and publication acknowledgements, we extract information on all tenure-track (or tenured) faculty at economic department from R1 institutions in the United States. We propose a networking index and a causal identification strategy.
