Competitiveness and Social Preferences
Abstract
Differences in willingness to compete effect labor market outcomes through self-selection; further second-order effects arise through gender stereotypes regarding these preferences. We experimentally investigate willingness to compete, prosociality in strategic games, and associated gender stereotypes. Individuals who choose less prosocial strategies in games may select into only a specific type of competition, and women may only select out of that same type of competition, indicating an incomplete truth in held stereotypes. We present experimental design and a preview of results.
